Tragedy Strikes at Smith Lake: Fatal Collision Claims Three Lives During Fishing Tournament

A devastating boating accident occurred on April 16, 2025, during the Tackle Warehouse Invitational fishing tournament on Lewis Smith Lake in Cullman County, Alabama. The collision between a center console vessel and a Nitro bass boat resulted in the deaths of three individuals and left several others injured.

The Incident

The accident took place around 7:00 a.m. local time near the Miller Flats area of Smith Lake. The center console boat, carrying three men, was struck by the Nitro bass boat. According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), the impact caused two individuals to be thrown overboard, leading to their drowning, while a third succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash.

Victims Identified

The victims were identified as:

  • Joey M. Broom, 58, of Altoona, Alabama
  • John K. Clark, 44, of Cullman, Alabama
  • Jeffrey C. Little, 62, of Brandon, Mississippi

Broom was a councilman for the Town of Snead, Alabama. Snead Mayor Tim Kent expressed deep sorrow, stating that Broom was known for his kindness and dedication to the community.

Involvement of Angler Flint Davis

Flint Davis, a competitor in the tournament from Leesburg, Georgia, was identified as one of the anglers involved in the incident. Major League Fishing (MLF), the organization hosting the tournament, confirmed his involvement and expressed condolences to all affected.

Tournament Response

In light of the tragedy, MLF canceled the final day of the tournament, which was scheduled for April 17. The organization stated that it is working closely with law enforcement and emergency officials as they continue their investigation into the cause of the collision.

Ongoing Investigation

The ALEA Marine Patrol Division is actively investigating the incident. At this time, the cause of the collision has not been determined, and authorities are working to gather all pertinent information.
